Zhao Shi Zhen's Chong Feng Lei Dian Che (衝鋒雷電車)

From left to right: front view, side view and rear view of Chong Feng Lei Dian Che, from 'Shen Qi Pu (《神器譜》)'.
Chong Feng Lei Dian Che (衝鋒雷電車, lit. 'Assault lightning cart'), also known as Chong Feng Huo Che (衝鋒火車, lit. 'Assault fire cart'), is yet another war wheelbarrow designed by Ming firearm specialist Zhao Shi Zhen (趙士楨). True to its namesake, Chong Feng Lei Dian Che has a more offensive role compared to its smaller cousin. Specifically, it is a close-range incendiary attack weapon that functions both as a mobile mantlet that protects its operators and sappers as they close in to their target under enemy fire, as well as being the primary incendiary weapon itself.

Chong Feng Lei Dian Che is armed with two rocket pods, each holding twenty rockets, as well as six Kuai Qiang (快鎗) handgonnes. For a vehicle of this size, it is comparatively lightly armed (even Zhao Shi Zhen's smaller multipurpose shield is more heavily armed than Chong Feng Lei Dian Che), presumably these weapons are only used for short-range defence or suppressive fire. In lieu of heavier armament, Chong Feng Lei Dian Che is equipped with five long-tubed incendiary launchers, ten short-tubed incendiary launchers, as well as thirty Kuai Zhuan Huo Qiu (快轉火球, lit. 'Fast-spinning fire ball'), likely also a type of incendiary bomb dispenser. Like the multipurpose shield, Chong Feng Lei Dian Che also comes equipped with props, although it lacks the iron chain of its smaller counterpart.

Zhao Shi Zhen also proposed a seven-man team to operate his wheelbarrow. The team consists of a captain, three steersmen (pushing/steering the wheelbarrow), one firewood collector, two reload assistants, as well as one "water troop" or fireman (tasked with extinguishing hazardous fires in case the mission goes horribly wrong). The team is also given an assortment of tools for fire-raising operation: an axe, a drill, a pair of pincers, a piece of one zhang long cloth-wrapper, a water bucket, and a hand-pump.

  1. zhao seems like a funny man, was his inventions only on paper or was it manufactured and implemented to an extend to the military?

    1. Yes, he's a really interesting guy and I really love writing about him. Most of his designed weapons saw (very) limited production, as he basically funded the initial production with his own money. A few of his weapons, such as Lumi arquebus and especially Jingal gun, were adopted on a wider scale.

  2. Greetings from Greece. I love your work. It's a wargamer's wet dream!
Since we're talking about a war wheelbarrow, I'd like to ask a question. I recently found an example of a traditional Chinese wheelbarrow with a weird axle assembly which enables a quick release ( https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/asian-art-furniture/more-asian-art-furniture/chinese-wheelbarrow-circa-1900/id-f_11427181/ ).
Is this axle assembly common? Does it have any particular name?

  3. Good day and welcome to my blog.

Unfortunately I am not an expert in Chinese wheelbarrow design or history, and that's actually the first time I've seen that kind of axle design. I tried to search for some old photos of Chinese wheelbarrow, but so far I've yet to find any identical one.
