Fei Tian Shen Huo Du Long Qiang (飛天神火毒龍鎗)

UPDATED MAY 24, 2022

Ming Chinese Handgonne Firelance
Drawing of a Fei Tian Shen Huo Du Long Qiang, from 'Wu Bei Zhi (《武備志》)'.
Fei Tian Shen Huo Du Long Qiang (飛天神火毒龍鎗, lit. 'Flying divine fire vicious dragon spear') is an unusual weapon that combines a spear, a handgonne and a fire lance into one weapon. It consists of a bronze or iron handgonne mounted on a wooden pole, a 2 cun 5 fen (8 cm or 3.15") long spearhead forged in two halves to accommodate the barrel of the handgonne in the middle, as well as two Pen Tong (噴筒) loaded with poison smoke-incendiary gunpowder and poisonous dust tied to the side of the gun barrel. The spearhead is also dipped in strong poison to improve its lethality.

  1. I noticed that Ming military manuals recorded many types of spear + handgonne or spear + fire tubes weapons, were they really that effective?

    1. They are versatile at all range, but most useful to launch a short range volley just before close combat or to deploy smoke screen to cover the charge.
