(Patreon post) Total War: Warhammer III Grand Cathay impression

Warhammer Fantasy Grand Cathay
P..plate armour?
At long last, the Grand Cathay faction has finally been unveiled! Which means it's time for an impression post! The article is posted on my Patreon, but it is public and accessible to everyone. Go read it here!

As a side note, you might also want to read my previous hype/wishlist article on the faction too!

  1. Well, can't agree on Kislev.
    It isn't just slightly worse.
Lazy and boring "shiny" implementation by people, who really don't know and love that they're designing.
Cathay is certainly ahead of that. Shame it isn't nowhere near the Empire, but it's still their best take on a new faction as of now.

    1. I think the problem with Kislev is that the devs unnecessarily overdesigned many of the units (i.e. Little Grom, Streltsy etc).

  2. why can't we have simply Eastern version of empire?

    1. Probably because the playerbase will demand something other than a reskinned Empire.

    4. 李成梁

I know, he is technically general/commander but still

I guess i just wanna see mandarin robe in action

    5. I don't think Li Chengliang is suitable to be portrayed in a mandarin robe. Wang Yangming, perhaps.

    6. For dumb high fantasy wargame i think wang is too sophisticated to be character

when we consider what li chengliang did to manchu can be implanted to ogre kingdom

    9. Li Chengliang is fine as a character, although I prefer him to be decked in armour.
Wang Yangming as a Warhammer character template is only limited by the competency of the dev.

  3. I think Cathay got the longer end of the stick in comparison to Kislev, which is so overdesigned it's basically Korean MMO faction. At least Cathay's got to have normal polearm infantry instead of axeguns.

    1. I don't have any particular issue with the axegun (the weapon) per se, but I see that as a case of pointlessly overdesign something for the sake of design/when it is not needed.

Streltsy by itself is already pretty distinctive unit, and IMO the axegun doesn't really add anything that bardiche+musket combo cannot do. In fact I think it actually detracts from the uniqueness of Streltsy, as now they feels more similar to Empire handgunners, and the axegun niche is also shared by Chaos Dwarf Fireglaive.

  4. Personally, the only part that raised my eyebrows was balloon gunner's weapon that looked and sounded like a bolt-action gun.

  5. About the headbands, Ive also noticed the headbands are a ubiquitous and reecuring piece of apparel across many korean historical films and dramas. I was curious whether you thought that was also historically accurate or just a design convention that they use in their dramas for the sake of fashion. Certaintly the shows make it seems like everyone and their moms are wearing headbands around all day

    1. At first when i saw them in the shows i thought it kinda made sense for irregular units like the righteous armies, a more fashionable drama-friendly replacement for the scrappy bandanas that peasants would wear on their heads for protection from the sun/ sweat.
Then i noticed all the soldiers and generals seem to wear them to, and then the purpose is kinda lost for me cuz wouldnt their respective hats or helmets?
Is it like a chaffing thing for like the samurai? Cuz then i would just assume much like the ming who has very similar equipment the skull cap padding would suffice.

    2. The Korean version is supposedly based on Manggeon, itself a derivative of Ming Dynasty Wangjin. Wangjin is a Ming-period male headdress worn by practically everyone, from common folk to emperor, to held up their topknot hairstyle (so it serves a practical purpose, and not associated by military rank or social status). It can be said that Wangjin practically represents Ming period, so the "everyone and their moms" part is actually accurate.

That being said, Wangjin tend to be made of semi-transparent, fishnet-like mesh rather than thick fabric. Most Korean Manggeon that I've seen are also like that, so I don't think the non-transparent "bandana" type commonly seen in KDrama and the Cathay teaser is accurate.

Also, most KDrama actors tend to wear their Manggeon very low (almost touching eyebrows), which is very inaccurate, and actually closer to Ming practice.
