Two Dao Ma Huo She Shen Gun, from 'Wu Bei Zhi (《武備志》)'. |
Dao Ma Huo She Shen Gun (倒馬火蛇神棍, lit. 'Horse-tipping fire snake divine staff') was a combination handgonne/fire lance designed for anti-cavalry purpose, following the Chinese doctrine of
countercharging enemy cavalry with relatively short weapon. The weapon came in two different variants: a single-shot variant that resembled a
Kuai Qiang (快鎗) with longer gun barrel but shorter wooden pole, and a double-ended variant that resembled a
Bian Chong (邊銃) without gun sight. The single-shot variant was loaded with lead bullets as well as fire and poison smoke-generating gunpowder, and shot both from the same barrel, while the double-ended variant shot lead bullet from one end (à la handgonne) and projected fire and poison smoke from the other end (à la fire lance).
