Ming Dynasty Explosive Fire Arrow
Drawing of a Gong She Huo Zhe Liu Jian, from 'Wu Bei Zhi (《武備志》)'.
Gong She Huo Zhe Liu Jian (弓射火柘榴箭, lit. 'Bow-launched fire pomegranate arrow'), also known simply as Shi Liu Jian (石榴箭, lit. 'Pomegranate arrow'), was a gunpowder-based fire arrow that had a barbed arrowhead to make extraction difficult, as well as a small incendiary bomb tied to just behind the arrowhead. The incendiary bomb was essentially a gunpowder-filled pouch made of layers of paper as well as hemp cloths, which was then sealed watertight with rosin. It was ignited through a burning fuse, and the fire it caused could not be easily doused by water.
