Ming shields from military treatise 'Wu Bei Zhi (《武備志》)'

Wu Bei Zhi Ming Chinese Pavise


Ming Dynasty shields from Wu Bei Zhi (《武備志》) include:
  • Bu Bing Pang Pai (步兵旁牌): Free-standing infantry shield. This design was inherited from Song Dynasty.
  • Qi Bing Pang Pai (騎兵旁牌): Cavalry shield. This design was inherited from Song Dynasty.
  • Shou Pai (手牌): Hand shield, also called Chang Pai (長牌, long shield) to differentiate from the round rattan shield. It could be shaped like a concave hexagon (as shown above) or more commonly, convex pentagon.
  • Yan Wei Pai (燕尾牌): Swallowtail shield, a variation of Shou Pai with a unique 'V' shape on top.
  • Ai Pai (挨牌 or 捱牌): Rectangular shield that is suspended from the neck with a shoulder strap, to free up the shield hand.
  • Teng Pai (藤牌): Rattan shield.
  • Mu Li Pai (木立牌): Wooden free-standing shield. This design was inherited from Song Dynasty.
  • Zhu Li Pai (竹立牌): Bamboo free-standing shield. This design was inherited from Song Dynasty.
